On Saturday afternoon my wife and I decided to drive down from the City along the coast on Highway 1 to catch Lucinda at the Catalyst. It was a beautiful drive. Along the way enjoyed scenic views, a walk on the beach with our three dogs, and a spectacular sunset. A great soundtrack of Lu songs only served to enhance our journey: Ventura, West, What If, and more. We made a little detour in Pescadero to pick up some Green Chile soup and bread at Duarte’s Tavern. Mmmmm good! We finally got to Santa Cruz around 8:30, scored a couple tixs outside the venue and came in after Buick 6’s set. Lu was a little remote at first (perhaps due to technical difficulties with the mixer). She didn’t hit her stride until about six songs in, but the rest of the show was stellar! Then before the encore, the Mayor of Santa Cruz came on stage to present Lu with a proclamation recognizing September 6, 2008 as Lucinda Williams Day in Santa Cruz! Lu was honored. Her encore consisted of Are You Down?, I Live My Life (this song needs to be released somehow, somewhere, sometime soon), and closed out with Lu co-playing the drums with John on AC/DCs “It’s Long Way To The Top.” She was clearly having fun. And so were we! All in all a sweet day’s night.
