Congratulations to The Ventures for finally being elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame…a well deserved honor.
I will no longer have to refer to it as the Hall of Shame.
It may interest some of you to know the Ventures sold more albums than the Beatles at the height of Beatlemania…due in large part to the Japanese audience, who recognized this great band.
The Ventures are the only band in history to do two different versions of the same song and have both versions make it to the Top 10.
“Walk Don’t Run” and “Walk Don’t Run ’64”
All guitar players, of any ability, would do well to go back and study the fine guitar work of Nokie Edwards on the “Live in Japan ’65” album.
No record collection is complete without at least “The Best of The Ventures.”
The Ventures could well be responsible for more kids picking up the guitar than any band in history.
Congratulations to Don Wilson, Mel Taylor, Bob Bogle, Gerry McGee, and of course, Nokie Edwards, for finally getting some well deserved recognition.
the ventures have done alot of good stuff, as have Herb Alpert and the TJ Brass, and hopefully they are in too. the hall of shame label still applies to one great guitar player – Johnny Winter, who, in his prime, could play rings around anybody
PUT JOHNNY IN !!!i guess it’s on VH1 tonight. my favorite Ventures song is Apache. congrats to them and how about getting Johnny Winter, Steve Miller and J Geils Band into that so called hall of fame. btw, who the hell put the hall in cleveland anyway? shouldn’t it be in memphis? i can’t think of anyplace i’d rather NOT be more than cleveland…
There’s supposed to be what many consider a true R& R hall of fame in Seattle, but it doesn’t get the press.
anyway, I’m glad for the Ventures…they deserve it, and they’ve been a tremendous influence on my playing…and not be be persnickity, but although the Ventures became known for doing songs like “Apache,” that was orignally a number by the British group the Shadows.
( Don’t mind me, I’m a big instrumental, surf/rock nut)
On another note, when I was very young I never cared for Buck Owens that much, until I had a reel to reel tape with Buck on one side, and the amazing instrumental prowess of the Buckaroos on the flip side.
Gave me a much better appreciation for ‘chiken-pickin.’
thanks for the info about the Shadows. i just got a triple shot of Apache over at youtube. great stuff, and that lead player, John (someone was lamenting about him in one of the comments, maybe he’s no longer with us?) looks kinda like Buddy Holly, or vice versa…
they rock! are they in the british HOF? if there is one, i wonder…oh yeah, and the Buckaroos at Carnegie hall is an awesome record, too.
