    I thought I’d throw this out here…

Any musicians in here that perform live? Coffee shops, open mikes, bands…etc..? If so, what Lucinda songs do you do that seem to get a good crowd response?

I play in a band, and I’d like to cover at least one Lucinda song, but picking and choosing is the hard part.

Stan, my band (also from Illinois) plays 2 Lucinda tunes. Drunken Angel and Essence. To put things in the proper context, we live in a cultural wasteland area and most bar patrons are content to hear live acts play the same stuff they heard on their ClearChannel classic rock station on the way to the club. Our core audience, who are discriminating listeners, appreciate our versions, but the majority of the crowd probably doesn’t know who Lucinda even is. Our somewhat revved up version of Essence usually goes over pretty well though. There are at least a dozen more “Lu” songs we’d like to do. Scott.

I’ve done ‘Jackson’ before, and it always got a good response. I tend to do mostly originals (haven’t done the open-mic thing in a long while), but have always been a little nervous about doing anything of hers that is more up-tempo, since it would be just me and my Gibson up there, and I’ve worried that I’d fall very flat trying to do something with a really full sound and fast pace to it.

Thanks for the responses…I’ve thought about Esscence and also Drunken Angel…also Real Live Bleedin’..” anyway…

Did a gig with some friends last Saturday and they did a nice low key version of “I Lost It.” I enjoyed it, not sure how well it went over in the bar, though?

My band is currently recording a new CD…once we have that done, we’re planning on putting up a web page..etc…My Space…whatever?

I became enamored with a girl on “You Tube” and I threw together a version of her song, and then wrote and recorded a song for her in one day, so it’s not the greatest.

I have an early version of a Roland VS digital recorder in my basement..so it’s fun to play all the parts. I use an Alexis drum machine, Strat, Gibson acoustic…etc..blah blah blah.

If you have time to kill…go to You Tube and do a search of HOOTSONGS There’s only two songs by me…”Incapable Cover,” and “This Is What Angels Must Sound Like.” I’m proud to say I play ukulele on the “Angels” song..Haha…just a happy little instrument.

Also…check out my favorite videos….and watch this band do a great cover of “Real Live Bleeding Fingers.”

I’m not much of a You Tube guy…no friends..no social networking..etc…just don’t have the time.

Merry Christmas to all of you. Stay safe.

I LOVE to perform her music. World Without Tears, Real Live Bleeding Fingers, Essence, Those 3 Days are a few of my favorites. Check her out on PBS tonight at midnight (Austiin City Limits) and again Dec 29.

Stan I just listened to your song “This Is What Angels Must Sound Like.” and I love it ! It s mildly reminiscent of the Kinks to me in sound and spirit. Great job ! The lyrics made me chuckle. The other song wouldn’t play (don’t know why) so I listened to the original by Kaitlyn and it was nice. I’ve played “Blue” in public with a gal friend of mine. I have some songs on Myspace using a drum machine and done on an 8 track recorder so the quality (and musicianship and vocals for that matter) aren’t great but you’ll get the general idea if you care to listen…

Hey John, thanks for the comments. I just listened to your songs….great job! I don’t usually judge songs on first listen, but overall, I enjoyed “Only Human” the most. You remind me of David Byrne of the Talking Heads….any influence?

And yeah, my “Incapable Cover” wouldn’t play for me last night either, but today it did, so if you want to waste another 2:30 of your life, it might work now? LOL

Hey, we’re neighbors…Michigan and Illinois. I get up to what they call Michiana about once a year to see friends.

To Tambourella…can you believe I fell asleep waiting for Lu last night?! Dam! I just worked 6 days in a row…about 50 hours. Lu didn’t come on till 11 at night (StL area)…I made the mistake of drinking 3 beers after work, and I was out by 10:30, I’m what’s known as a “cheap date.” Thanks for the heads up about Dec., 29th.

Rachel…let us know when you get a web site up and running.

Take care and Merry Christmas to all of you. (Gee, maybe I’ll wake up Christmas morning to find Lu under my tree, wearing nothing but a red ribbon and a smile?…Hey! I can dream!)

Just wasted that 2:30 and it was more than worth it. Nice work, Stan. Thanks for the compliment. We are practically neigbors, aren’t we? I have been to 3 out of the last five Chicago Blues festivals. Great times there. I just love Ronnie Baker Brooks. Gonna see him in Kalamazoo Feb 1st. You goin ? Ever get over to Detroit?

Most of the lyrics can be sung from the male perspective without much changing (“he” to “she” and so on). Males, obviously won’t have Lucinda’s same gorgeous voice (no one could). Pick a song(s) that works best with your voice. Also, do something with some Lucinda’s vocal inflections/style to make the song(s) into (your) performance (like revving up Essence). To try an exact copy, will obviously fall way short, while building on it gives you a chance to be creative. I always remeber seeing a band do “Born to be Wild” with a violin lead. It might have sucked on an album, but in the moment, it was excellent.

    John and Stan,

I listened to your music (that you pointed to) and really enjoyed it. I hope you both continue with it.
