I’d just like to say what a rare pleasure it was to see Lucinda and the band on such splendid form last night.

Everything about the show was just great. My first time at the O2/Indigo, so didn’t know what to expect, but the atmosphere and vibes of the place were superb. It felt like being back in the Marquee in Wardour Street those many years ago (accept here the staff were much more friendly and polite – perhaps that’s what a few grey hairs gets you).

The support act was brilliant – a solo singer – Devon (missed her surname), such an exquisite singing voice, great guitar playing.

Then Lucinda and the band – they nailed it, big time! The lead guitarist, the dude from the Flaming Lips – was on fire. Lucinda’s vocal performance was all rawness, power, fragility all rolled into one – spine tingling stuff. The only, tiny, downer was Lucinda’s need to read the song lyrics out of the book on the dias beside her. I guess with the depth of material she has she can’t be expected to remember the words to them all. We even got Riders on the Storm, Lu’s own tribute to Jim Morrison. She wanted to sing all night, the crowd were calling out songs they wanted to hear, let’s hope she gives us the rest of her stuff tonight.

I agree it was a great show and Lucinda was amazing – but for me it could have been better. The reason? Well, it will become obvious when I reveal that my favourite song of her’s is Minneapolis (plus Lake Charles, Car Wheels, OverTime – which we heard – etc.). If I wanted yelling and screaming guitars, I could go next door to hear Dave Grohl and the Foos (which I did the previous evening). OK, I guess it’s just me…

Well Charles I am intrigued? The lead guitarist from the Flaming Lips? I assume you mean Chet Lyster from Eeels who played some lead guitar to supplement lead guitarist Doug Pettibone. Chet used to play with Eels, as did drummer Butch Norton.

The opener was Virginia’s own Devon Sproule.

I stand corrected. I’m a bit brain-dead this morning, I’m getting too old to survive on 5 hours sleep!

Where did I get Flaming Lips from??

You got Flaming Lips from its frontman, who wrote the lyrics to “Marching the Hate Machines Into the Sun,” which Lucinda acknowledged and performed. “Virginia’s own” Devon Sproule (from Charlottesville) also had a UK-based pedal steel player for most of the songs; I look forward to her again tonight. The complete set list. . .

I’m in total agreement. What a great gig. Scorching band and Lu in a really happy mood. Loved the set. She played almost everything I wanted to hear (Crescent City would have made it nigh on perfect).
The venue was pretty good. I’m not too sure about the Marquee comparison, except maybe for the atmosphere. Great sound and good sight lines. I wasn’t drinking so can’t comment on the beer, but one of my mates said the Guinness he bought was the worst one he’s ever drunk.

Yes, noted the faux pas in previous message. But easy to be mesmerised by such a great gig. Must point out you missed out Riders on the storm from end of first set before the break..Wow! it was pleasure to hear that.
Unfortunately had to leave to catch the coach back to Bristol and missed the last 2 numbers, shame as had been waiting to hear Unsuffer me all night. But hey! she palyed so many of my real faves…roll on the next tour…will make sure I miss none of it..

Yes, cannot agree more, the band were a really awesome. and the sound was as good as I have ever heard. Her voice was spellbinding at times. The venue really impressed me. I will attend again now I know, preferably for a LW show as she was so impressed by it too.
As for the beer I did not even bother. Having come from a real ale pub with my mate Bob and having drunk a gorgeous Yorkshire ale I was not even tempted by the pitiful stuff on offer, in plastic galsses, Yuk! And I dread to think how much too?

    hi all,

took in both gigs at O2, both very different, as usual!!!, Lu is the Queen of England!!!

The Venue ?, very nice indeed, but…….poor crowds, maybe to far out of central London, the Bush was jam packed last year for both gigs, could be a problem for the future of this venue.

    We love you Lucinda. xxxx

Having been at both nights too I have to agree, the venue is superb, but until it garners greater recognition it may not pull the crowds artists draw elsewhere in the capital. Also for people living on the west of London it’s a hell of a drive.

That said Lucinda sang better than I have heard her for a number of years, the sound again was impeccable and the band magnifique.

Monday’s set list from memory and not necessarily in order, went something like this:

    Are You Alright
    Fruits of My Labour
    Steal Your Love
    Learning How To Live
    Drunken Angel
    People Talkin’
    I Lost It
    Righteously
    Out Of Touch
    Are You Down
    Come On
    Honey Bee
    Joy
    Riders On the Storm

I think a lot of people haven’t realised how easy it is to get to O2 / Indigo. The Dome’s reputation has stuck. Sunday was my 1st visit and we were all amazed how quickly we got there and got away – notwithsatnding Foo Fighters crowd coming out at the same time.
Coming down from north London, it’s much easier to get to than Shepherd’s Bush.

Today’s Independent carries a stunning full half page review of Lucinda’s Sunday gig at IndigO2. I’m sure it will be posted here at some stage:

    http://arts.independent.co.uk/music/reviews/

Suffice to say it got 5 stars and the final comment – the messmerising Williams is irresistable and impossible to pigeon hole.

    I’ll drink to that:-)

At last ‘Ventura’ is on YouTube – search under Lucinda Williams Ventura – there are currently 2 posts of the same video – one has been deleted, so if you call this up first – go to the next one posted by ‘Nordy Trucker’ – it IS there (honest!)
