I just recently purchased the Ryan Adams cd “Gold” and am really liking it. My question is, if I wanted to buy another one of his albums, is there one you would recommend getting next? Also, does anyone know the significance of the upside down American flag on the cover of Gold? The answer may be obvious, but I really am curious since I’ve seen it elsewhere. Thanks.
November 10, 2007 at 12:04 am #34927parkercaParticipant“Heartbreaker” is really good. It is the album he did before “Gold”.
November 10, 2007 at 1:28 am #34928AnonymousInactiveThanks for the suggestion. I will try that one out. It’s fun finding different and new music. I don’t really listen to the radio here. I usually listen to my ipod and just stumble upon something I like on itunes. But that’s very rare. I’m really excited to find Lucinda! Truth is, I haven’t really bought too much new music in a while. Do you have any other artists you could recommend?
November 10, 2007 at 2:57 am #34929parkercaParticipantI used to be a HUGE Ryan Adams fan. The first two discs (Heartbreaker/Gold) I just about wore out. I kept buying the new discs but never felt like they held up against the first two.
Here are some artists I really like besides Lucinda of course 😆
Bob Dylan
Wilco
Steve Earle
Gillian Welch
Guy Clark
Billy Joe Shaver
The Waifs (Austrailian folk band, They are awesome)
Jim LauderdaleNovember 10, 2007 at 2:03 pm #34930AnonymousInactiveThanks for the great list! I know Bob Dylan of course, he’s from the iron range. I used to have his lyrics book, but gave it away in a fit of stupidity. My husband told me not to, but I didn’t listen. I only know the song “Copperhead Road” from Steve Earle. I stood by him once while they were setting up the stage for his show. I wish I would have started up a conversation, but I was too shy back then. He seemed like a regular kind of guy, accessible. I never got to see him play because I worked in the office. Trust me, it was brutal.
I will have to check out the other names on your list. I also recently bought the Robert Plant/Alison Krauss cd, but haven’t listened to the whole thing yet. I’m a little upset with her for stealing my man. Actually, think about it, a Williams/Plant rock and roll duet. Wouldn’t that be awesome?! Speaking of duets, who has Lucinda done duets with and which ones would you say really stand out?
November 10, 2007 at 2:32 pm #34931parkercaParticipantThat is very cool about Steve Earle. I met him about 3 years ago at the Woody Guthrie Festival here in Oklahoma. He was very nice, signed some albums and took a photo with me. “Train A’Comin” is a good album. Probably my favorite of his from 1995.
Williams/Plant would be a great duet. The duets that I am aware of are:
Lucinda Williams/WIllie Nelson “Over Time” from Willie’s “Outlaws and Angels”
Lucinda/Steve Earle “You’re Still Standing There” from Steve Earles’ “I Feel Alright”
Lucinda/John Prine “Wedding Bells/Let’s Turn Back the Years” from John Prines’ In Spite of Oursleves
Lucinda/Elvis Costello “There’s A Story In Your Voice” From Costello’s “Delivery Man”
Colin Linden, Larry Donahue & Lucinda Williams “Come To Me Baby” Tribute to Howling Wolf.
November 10, 2007 at 2:34 pm #34932parkercaParticipantShe also did “Factory Girls” with Flogging Molly
November 11, 2007 at 10:53 pm #34933AnonymousInactiveSo what albums would you recommend for Wilco, Jim Lauderdale and Gilian Welch. I recognized Jim Lauderdale (looking on itunes) from Lucinda’s DVD. Didn’t know his name until you told me. He seems really good. I was watching a couple Lucinda videos on you tube (my kids think I’m cracked because I’m actually logging into you tube, it’s like, give me a break I’m not that old – sorry I digress) and they are very entertaining. Do you know why she doesn’t have more DVDs available? Do you know if there are any downloads to purchase on the web. She’s awesome live!!! Have you seen any of her shows?
OK. I downloaded some duets and singles not on her regular albums. Going through them right now while makiing dinner. There is one called “Down to the Well” with Kevin Gordon. They sound great together! You should give it a listen. He’s a good singer. He kind of sounds like a cross between John Hiatt, Tom Petty and Lyle Lovett. They compliment each other on this song.
November 13, 2007 at 3:54 am #34934parkercaParticipantHere are a few places to begin for Wilco and Gillian Welch
Wilco
“Being There”
“Yankee Hotel Foxtrot”
“Sky Blue Sky”Gillian Welch
“Time (the revelator)”
Jim Lauderdale
“Headed For The Hills”I do have that duet with Kevin Gordon. It is really good.
Lucinda does two duets with Doug Pettibone on his album.
They do the Beatles’ “The Two of Us” and Dylan’s “She Belongs To Me” GOOD STUFF!November 14, 2007 at 10:49 pm #34935CarlParticipantGetting back to Ryan Adams Love Is Hell is pretty good as is Jacksonville City Limits.
I’d also recommend the Whiskeytown album Strangers Almanac, being the band he was in before going solo.
November 15, 2007 at 12:04 am #34936AnonymousInactiveI love all these recommendations! It is great. I went ahead and took ParkerCA’s advice and purchased “Heartbreaker”. Haven’t had a chance to download the songs, but what I’ve heard so far is really good. I also bought Allison Moorer “The Definitive Collection”. She is pretty amazing and has excellent songs. I don’t know where I stumbled onto her name, while browsing around this site or itunes, but she is definitely worth checking out if you’re interested. On some of her songs, her voice kind of reminds me of Anita Baker (I consider that a high compliment).
I’m trying to find other artists’ music to listen to. I don’t want to overplay Lucinda’s cds if you know what I mean. I would tend to do that since I love her songs so much. Anything you all could suggest I’d really appreciate!
Thanks.
November 30, 2007 at 3:42 pm #34937AnonymousInactiveThis is something else. I’m going to reply to myself here. But I’m trying to turn over a new leaf and stay on topic. Since we were discussing “Heartbreaker” here, I just had to post this link of perhaps the greatest music video ever:

I’m sorry Alison, but right back at you. I saw that look on your face on the back of your new album. Alright, I really love the album “New Favorite”, but that’s beside the point. I’m in pain here.
I just got my copies of the El Rey disc set. So far I’m really loving it. I purchased them because I read Lucinda interacts with the audience alot. I wanted to hear some of the stories behind the songs. I haven’t been disappointed. They are terrific! I give her alot of credit for making that available for us to listen to. She’s the best.

…November 30, 2007 at 9:04 pm #34939AnonymousInactiveI think the reason your face is red is because you were experiencing a fever the day you let Lucinda slide into second place. I hope you’re feeling better now.
I’ve heard the name Jayhawks, but have never heard of any of the other bands. What kind of music do they play?
November 30, 2007 at 10:40 pm #34940joe_from_parisParticipantCracker > rock band with a taste of country.
