I’ve asked this question before, so I thought I’d throw it out there again.
Anyone know what type of guitars and gear Lucinda and Doug use?
Lucinda’s guitar looks to be a Gibson J-45…and I’m not sure about Doug, as he switches guitars a lot, but I’d be interested in amps and effects too, if anyone knows?
I’ve been a guitarist for many many years, and I’ve written to Guitar Player magazine requesting they do an article on doug and/or Lucinda, but so far no luck.
If anyone knows where I can get further info….thanks!

November 6, 2007 at 6:28 pm #34854Inside JobParticipantNow that’s asking for a lot. Doug has more guitars than Nigel Tufnel. Give me a little time on this one.
November 6, 2007 at 9:32 pm #34855StanParticipantThanks for any help, Inside Job. I’ve always been curious about this.
If I could get more people to drop a line to Guitar Player magazine, maybe we could get an article….way overdue.
Send them an e-mail, everyone!

interesting topic. Maybe some pics of Doug´s Pedal Board may help:

Throb Tremolo, Hot Cake, ZVEX Seek Wah, Menatone Red Snapper (not sure). Doug´s amp is an Matchless Clubman, and a Fender Princeton.
For the guitars: I like the Chet Atkins Nashville Double Cutaway most.

There’s indeed a Red Snapper (old three knob model) on Doug’s board. Also present are a Zvex Fuzzfactory, Boss AW-2, Boss DD-3 (with additional taptempo footswitch), Ernie Ball volume pedal and some other stuff I can’t quite make out. I’ve also noticed a Line6 DL4 in Haarlem last night.
For the guitars: I like the Chet Atkins Nashville Double Cutaway most.
My favourite is the red Strat (it’s got a new pickguard now!)- although the Gibson Les Paul goldtop Doug used in ‘Real Live Bleeding Fingers’ comes close 🙂
November 13, 2007 at 9:16 pm #34859MTParticipantLucinda plays a J-45 and an Esquire (not sure about which year).
Doug? I’ve seen him with Stratocasters, Les Pauls, Gretsch and play as many as eight guitars in one night. Oh yeah, add Rickenbackers and SGs to the list of what I’ve seen him play.
November 14, 2007 at 3:54 pm #34860GretschmanParticipantDoug uses a Matchless Clubman head and cabs for his main guitar and he used to have a Fender Vibroverb for the pedal steel. Latest pics seem to show Mesa Boogie amps on his side of the stage.
I have seen him play Gretsch – ahem – Chet Atkins Double Cutaway, DC Duojet, James Trussart Steel Deville, Fender Stratocaster, Telecaster, Jazzmaster, Gibson Les Paul Custom, Les Paul DC Junior. He likes his guitars………so do I.

The pics must have been mirrored- Doug still uses a Matchless head (there is a spare one present too these days), plugged into a Matchless combo. There are also two Fender amps on his side of the stage, one of which may be used for pedal steel and the other by Lucinda…?
The Mesa Boogie rig is the new guy’s.I have seen him play Gretsch – ahem – Chet Atkins Double Cutaway, DC Duojet, James Trussart Steel Deville, Fender Stratocaster, Telecaster, Jazzmaster, Gibson Les Paul Custom, Les Paul DC Junior. He likes his guitars………so do I.
He has a wonderful collection and the best thing is, he brings them out on the road too! Don’t forget the white SG and the 12 string Rickenbacker, and the lovely goldtop.
November 15, 2007 at 3:48 pm #34862GretschmanParticipantYeah you are right about the SG and the Rickenbacker. Actually he played 2 SGs: A custom and a Junior last year in London. I am a big disciple of Doug’s trying to acquire a matching collection to my hero and apart from costing the earth – even with identical gear I still can’t play like him or sound like him which is why I get a bit defensive when folks are a bit mean about him. I think he is the best sideman Lu has had and hope they stick together.

I just had to register on this site to totally agree with your statement about Doug, I have played guitar for a lot of years and can say Doug’s in a class of his own, his licks n fills are a joy to listen too,
I also love Buddy Millers guitar work, but would not dream of trying to come to a decision to say who is best, it does not work like that IMO, each guitarist brings his own “Essance”( no pun intended) through his fingers, to want to play Like doug is admirible Gretschman, but I think its a long road, but I can think of only a few Guitarists I would want to play like, and Doug would be the top or very near. 😀 -
