HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!!! DAVID BYRNE!!!!
Need I say more?
Great show, tons of fun, David Johansen(NY Dolls)doing Jailhouse Tears, Like a Rose and Side of the Road were fucking perfect!!!
THANKS LUCINDA and CO. have fun in Europe!
October 5, 2007 at 4:56 am #34561Hot_BloodedParticipantI could not fucking believe it when David Byrne stepped out. Man, it was amazing. Totally blew me away to see the two of them together. Just an unbelievable night and she sounded and played and looked flawless.
October 5, 2007 at 4:57 am #34562HarryParticipantByrne was great. He did “Naked” and “Heaven”. Lucinda said that “Heaven” was a favorite of hers. She looked to be in heaven when Byrne was there, jumping around like a little kid.
My only disappointment was that she did “Passionate Kisses” totally solo.
Overall, another great show and Lucinda was in a great mood. She even brought her fiance out for a kiss on stage.
October 5, 2007 at 5:00 am #34563gravel roadsParticipantLucinda you ROCKED! The first set was perfect. Side of the Road is stunning.
David Byrne’s voice is right there with Lucinda’s. The two of them together are unbelievable. As Emmylou Harris said in an article, Lucinda could sing the phonebook and give it meaning. Perhaps the two of them should do a duet album? like knoffler and harris..
October 5, 2007 at 5:15 am #34564ive lost itParticipantOver Time with David Byrne!!!
“Piece of My Heart” with Susan Marshall, in memeory of Janis.
Lots of cool moments tonight! All in all, a great run in NYC!

I’m a relatively new fan and can’t believe I spent all those years without having her to listen to, but I’m making up for lost time, saw 3 of the shows. “Jailhouse Tears” at Irving Plaza on the “Essence” night was perfection. Jim Lauderdale and Lucinda have to record that together. His take on that is spot on. What a band she has assembled!
October 5, 2007 at 1:42 pm #34566tntracyParticipantSounds like an awesome show – I wish I could have been there!

October 5, 2007 at 2:19 pm #34567homosacerParticipantwith all due respect, am I the only one who didn’t like David Byrne’s voice? It was too shallow and he had a hard time hitting notes in Over Time and especially that white-boy cover of Take Me to the River he did. On his songs I thought he sounded good, but Lord Jesus on the others……
October 5, 2007 at 2:34 pm #34568nycParticipantCan someone please put up a set list? Thanks.
October 5, 2007 at 2:40 pm #34569sanantonioroseParticipanthomosacer, funny you say that…i was feeling the same way, but thought i was just annoyed that all i wanted to hear was lu. i loved watching her enjoying herself so much, but was a little surprised when everyone went so crazy when david byrne came out, i mean he’s good, but lucinda is up there with janis and bob and elvis.
October 5, 2007 at 3:00 pm #34570parkercaParticipantSo was this the best show out of the 5 NYC shows?
October 5, 2007 at 3:43 pm #34571davekParticipantI loved the show, but the first set was a bit of a rambling mess and Lucinda was quite unnerved at times. The recording “Lucinda Williams” is a fantastic album and I was very moved by many of the performances–just sublime. Jim Lauderdale was the perfect foil for Lucinda. I just loved the two of them singing and playing in unison. It was certainly a highlight throughout the evening (especially the first set). However, there were far too many false starts (maybe 7 or 8) and they mostly appeared towards the end of the first set. It took the band out of their groove. Things were really coming apart by the end of the set. There were still far more highs than lows.
Everybody was much looser and in better spirits for the second set. Guest appearances often result in polite uninspired music with much self-congratulations. That was far from the case. I thought the set worked brilliantly from beginning to end with all of the guests making excellent contributions. The band was just smoking throughout the set. It was nothing like I expected it to be, but I loved it from beginning to end. thought David Byrne was just superb. Heaven was especially moving. David Johannsen was the perfect foil for Jailhouse Tears. The band just totally kicked ass for Joy and Honeybee playing with the energy of a punk band with great chops. I loved the show, though it was a ragged mess.
October 5, 2007 at 5:37 pm #34572theGrapeDotOrgParticipantI think if people want to see a flawless show, they should go see the Eagles who will not vary a single note from the album. If Lucinda doesn’t like what she is hearing and she wants to start over, that is her prerogative. It does stop the flow and you and I might not notice the difference, but this high standard help make the final product live and in the studio so freaking special.
I think one of the reasons that Joy and Honey Bee were so hot is that the band was stoked after covering the New York Dolls. They did Looking For A Kiss justice down to filling in for the late great Johnny Thunders.
October 5, 2007 at 5:47 pm #34573HarryParticipantI think that the reason for the very high number of start overs in this week’s shows is that they were being recorded for posterity (as if there weren’t people recording nearly all her shows, LOL) and Lu wanted them to be as perfect as possible. Start overs are not uncommon with her, but I’ve never seen so many in one show/series of shows.
October 5, 2007 at 7:30 pm #34574davekParticipantI wasn’t looking for a flawless show and I don’t mind restarts in small measure. But this one simply included too many. Even if you don’t mind, it’s hard to deny that it doesn’t affect Lucinda and the Band. She was visibly upset and agitated. As I stated I loved the show regardless.
I completely agree that the band was totally stoked after performing the NY Dolls tune.
Not that I care one way or another, but I seriously doubt that an Eagles performance is characterized by flawless execution. They are a nostalgia act and people will pay premium dollar whether they are well rehearsed or not. Despite the over-produced and glossy albums, I don’t think they were ever a super tight live act.
