Great Show! I totally appreciate the album a lot more now that I have heard it live. A good part of the show was just Lucinda and her guitar. The sound in Town Hall was stunning. Lu seemed happy and relaxed. Jim Lauderdale sang on almost the whole (record)album. The highlight of the night was Joan Osborne and Lu singing a great blues number that sounded a little like the “Mean Woman Blues” that Joan did on Austin City Limits. I saw both Lucinda and Joan at the 2004 Newport Folk Festival but I think this was the first time that they have played together.
Lucinda in her most relaxed and happy mood giving an inspired and
sometimes nervous (because she hadn’t performed the old songs much)
performance with one of her best bands I have seen.First set was from 8:25 til 9:40. Second set was from 10:10 til 11:25.
I could have done without two of her guests (Fionne Regan and Angel
?), but Joan Osborne and Yo La Tengo were great and very good
respectively.She ended the show with Joy and Get Right With God and rocked them both.
Her two mamas (her name for them) singing backup were a nice addition at times though the sound was a little uneven in terms of the vocal mixing. Otherwise, the sound was fantastic. I was upstairs and was surprised how good it sounded. I suspect tonight in the 4th row (yeah – sorry) the vocals
may be missing even more for me.I agree with zanthus, Sweet Old World was well done last night and Lucinda excells by herself. The band is great, but when she sings and plays alone the venue shrinks, and becomes a more intimate expression of the songs.
Ther second set was good too, with the highlight being 2 members of yo la tengo doing a dylan song, “Wallflower”, and a YLT number off their album “and nohing turned itself inside out.” Can’t say I enjoyed Joan Osborne at all, just not a fan of hers, way too cheesy. It was interesting to hear Joan’s voice and then Lucinda’s, and realize how beautifully unique Lucinda’s voice is. Overall a pleasant experience and LW appeared to much more relaxed and well rested. One more night, can’t wait!I agree, Joan Osborne was dissapointing and so ordinary. I can’t possibly believe that Lucinda listens to her. The other special guests were great and unique.
It is a pleasure to hear the songs on Sweet Old World. “Sidewalks of the City” and “Little Angel, Little Brother” were the highlights for me.
so I’ve been running a tally in my head each night of what songs I think sounded the best (I haven;t bought the CDs so this is going on memory) but last night, I think Memphis Pearl and Which Will sounded the best, et tu?
Also, anyone else loving Fionn Regan or is it just me? I liked both songs, but the song he did w/ the band (same one he did on Sunday night) was just great.
yeah, i kinda dig Fionn. i totally forgot about Tara Angel, enough said, but way better than Joan Osborne.
“Six Blocks Away”, sounded fantastic, always wanted to hear that live.
Last night’s show (Sweet Old World) was sooo much better than the previous night. I’ve seen worse meltdowns from Lucinda and the best Lucinda show I’ve ever seen (at the Birchmere) had a far worse meltdown. When there was a startover last night, it was fun. She completely re-arranged “Sidewalks Of the City” on the fly and it really worked. It was amusing to see her take the acoustic away from Doug, assign him back to the electric, and move Chet from pedal steel to keyboards. Then invite the back up singers back on stage where they delivered impromptu backing vocals that were a fantastic addition to the arrangement. We also got some humor as the singers had joined the audience and had a bit of trouble getting back to the stage. You can hear the audience laughing at this on the disc.
By the way, I listened to the entire cd from the show and the sound was actually much clearer and better on the cd than it was in the theatre. We could not hear Jim Lauderdale’s vocals in the audience, but they come through loud and clear on the disc.
Does anyone know if the Mia Ciambotti who sang back up last night is related to Lucinda’s former bass-man? She is one hell of a good singer.
Looking forward to “Lucinda Willams” in its entirety tonight.

Mia Ciambotti is the daughter of Lucinda’s former bassist. We learned that out here in Los Angeles at the shows.

I believe Gia Ciambotti toured with Bruce Springsteen in his “other band” in 92-93 when the E Street Band was broken up.

What is interesting is that Nina Simone made her debut concert LP at Town Hall singing “Fine and Mellow” in 1959

“I saw Lucinda for the first time Wed at Town Hall. I’ve loved her music
for some time but I’m afraid to report the rumours that I ‘ve heard
about her live performances seem to be true. When she did
play it was great but she stopped the band at least four times during
the first set. How UNprofessional. My friend left at the break and
I stayed hoping that I wouldn’t be further disappointed. It got worse.
After two songs she paraded a list of her new faves out on the stage
to do their songs. Only 2 of the 8(?) acts had talent worth listening to.
I thought I had come to see Lucinda but I wound up seeing her friends.
I was so put off by the experience I don’t think I’ll go see her again.”
I hope she gets over her problem. I really do love HER music.
