OK, I’ll lead off here. It is my great pleasure to heartily recommend:
1) “All This Time” by The Heartless Bastards
2) “Okonokos” by My Morning JacketHow ’bout you?
November 4, 2006 at 8:42 am #32089AnonymousGuestThe Heartless Bastards are amazing. I saw them at the 400 Club in Minneapolis and they put on a great show. I stayed after to talk with them for awhile , told them how Lucinda put them on her amazon.com music to listen to list, and told them they should be playing at First Avenue instead of driving a van around playing at clubs. And then presto! they were opening for Lucinda months later. I also told them they were a better trio than Cream, which I stand by. They are a great bunch of musicians, so humble that they don’t even know the incredible talent they possess.
My Morning Jacket sucks. I saw their famous rain show at Bonnaroo and I was not impressed. Listened to their albums too and they aren’t that good. Lucinda and the Heartless Bastards are just on another lyrical plane than they are. Not to equate those two, but my morning jacket are so far inferior to Lucinda, and so inferior to the Heartless Bastards it isn’t even funny.
November 4, 2006 at 9:54 am #32090SonOParticipantRay Wylie Hubbard:’Snake Farm’, Guy Clark:’Workbench Songs’ ,Tim Easton:’Ammunition’ ,Tony Joe White:’Uncovered’, Robert Earl Keen:’What I Really Mean’, Alejandro Escovedo:’The Boxing Mirror’.
Peace,
SonONovember 4, 2006 at 8:58 pm #32091AnonymousGuestHey Lefty,
Sorry about my harsh words, I was quite rude to you and didn’t mean any disrespect. I was in a bad mood and thinking about how Jim James plays with Bright Eyes sometimes and that got me all wound up. I actually have only heard one full album by them, in addition to seeing them live, so maybe I just need to hear more. Again, sorry for my rudeness.

November 4, 2006 at 10:04 pm #32092LeftyParticipantNo harm, no foul, as they say in b’ball, Clive. Have a great Sat. night!
Btw, besides Lu, what else are you listening to that’s good?
November 5, 2006 at 8:47 am #32093AnonymousGuestThe Heartless Bastards – All This Time
Neko Case – The Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
Bob Dylan – Modern Times
Johnny Cash – American V
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Show Your Bones
Clem Snide – End of Love
Mary Gauthier – Mercy Now
Okkervil River – Black Sheep BoyEverything SonO mentioned is also good-excellent.
I haven’t listened to very many new albums this year, I’m in a phase where I am really only listening to Lucinda, my usual rotation of artists, and the albums I loved from last year. Could have also included clap your hands say yeah and arcade fire on this list but that would be even more dated lol.
Can’t wait to see the Heartless Bastards in Brooklyn and Manhattan in mid-November!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can you recommend anything for me Lefty that came out recently??
I’m still reeling from Sleater-Kinney breaking up as well. I have spent a considerable portion of my time listening to them since their “hiatus” announcement.
November 5, 2006 at 10:06 am #32094SonOParticipant‘American V’ here as well, along with Johnny’s ‘Personal File’.Found a used copy for ’bout 12 bucks.A steal. But ya know,I’ve been listening to Cash all my life.I’ve cut back on my buying recently due to the pre-order of the new Waits 3 CD set and the Clash Singles set.I wasn’t big on the punk stuff way back, but I did like the Clash and the Stranglers.I still spin them both fairly often.Love Neko Case but all I have is ‘Blacklisted’.I’ve heard most of her other stuff and it is all great.Wow,what a style!!
Peace,
SonONovember 6, 2006 at 2:02 pm #32095LeftyParticipant“You in Reverse” by Built to Spill is a fine effort by Doug Martsch & co. One of my personal “albums of the year.”
November 9, 2006 at 12:00 pm #32096G-ManParticipantMy current faves are:
Jeffrey Focault – “Ghost Repeater”
Will Kimbrough – “Americanitis”
The Wailin’ Jennys – “Firecracker”
Darrell Scott – “The Invisible Man”November 11, 2006 at 2:10 pm #32097Scot1ParticipantHi Guys,
Been listening to Lu’s stuff obviously, but also been giving some time to Alice Cooper’s early stuff, Frank Zappa, Joe Walsh, Little Feat, the Boss, Tom Waits ( what’s ‘Jersey Girl’ like ! ) John Prine, Neil Young, Faith no More, Bob Dylan’s Hard Rain, ( best version of ‘Shelter from the Storm’ ) Steve Earle, think his last three albums have been the best stuff he’s written. The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, pure Rock n Roll vaudeville! The best rock band ever…AC/DC… prefer Bon but Brian was the only replacement good enough, and he has carried it handsomely. As I write this, ZZ Top’s Rio Grande Mud is on the deck. Vinyl rools !November 12, 2006 at 3:09 pm #32098HuguesParticipantI listen to a lot of music, but if I had to recommend a record released this year to Lucinda Williams fans, it’d be Jolie Holland’s Springtime Can Kill You. It doesn’t rock, but it’s got this moody, haunting charm of Essence, with a folk-jazz touch. Pure poetry.
November 29, 2006 at 5:41 pm #32099LeftyParticipantBeen enjoying lately very much “Doug Sahm and Band;” a ’73 album reissued this year by Collector’s Choice Music. Only took me 33 years to find this gem!
December 28, 2006 at 12:48 am #32100LeftyParticipantBeen ringing out the year with “The Minus 5” by The Minus 5. Also is referred to as “the gun album.” Members of REM, Wilco, the Decemberists, and a host of others joined forces for this. Sort of sounds like the Beatles, Squeeze and Nick Lowe to me. Sort of sounds like pure pop for the Apocalypse. Enjoy it while you can! 8)
December 29, 2006 at 6:54 pm #32101spyderParticipantJackie Greene- “American Myth” and “Gone Wanderin'” and Robert Earl Keen – WIRM.
But I got Guy Clark’s :Work Bench Songs” and CCR – “Live & Loud at Cains” for xmas, so for the last couple of days it’s been those two.
February 17, 2007 at 12:34 am #32102LeftyParticipantNeed I say it? WEST! 😀
